Libby Schaaf (born November 27, 1965) is an American politician who served as the 50th Mayor of Oakland, California from 2015 to 2023.
Early Life and Education: She was raised in Oakland and Piedmont, California. Schaaf graduated from Skyline High School in Oakland and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Rollins College. She also holds a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.
Early Career: Before entering politics, Schaaf worked as an aide to U.S. Representative Barbara Lee and later worked for then-Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. She also worked in community development.
Oakland City Council: Schaaf served on the Oakland%20City%20Council representing District 4 from 2010 to 2014.
Mayor of Oakland: She was elected Mayor of Oakland in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. During her tenure, she focused on issues like affordable housing, public safety, and economic development. She oversaw significant development projects in Oakland. She dealt with a housing crisis and worked on initiatives to address homelessness. Schaaf faced challenges during her time as mayor, including navigating the Ghost Ship warehouse fire and dealing with rising crime rates.
Political Positions: She is generally considered a Democrat. As mayor she supported measures aimed at police reform and community policing.
